Hello New Year! - Hello fatigue and DOMS!

5 January 2011

Essentially the start of a new year today - I am back at work and hopefully on the wagon until Feb....also I am going to try and keep this up to date a bit more so here goes - the last three days...oh and the last months metrics below:

Well I can tell I am back training properly again everything aches just a little bit!

After Wimbleball (spot the big hills!!)...

...I did a longish tempo run on Monday - nice hill in the middle (Morlaix Av in Truro..killer)...

...and struggled through a not very good Functional Threshold Power (FTP) session on the turbo last night...the intention of this was to try and compare my turbo to the computrainer I do my VO2Max testing on (as the power outputs don't match - ie.I produce more power on the computrainer...) but unfortunatley I am still fatigued from the Wimbleball ride so it didn't work very well...

....Okaaay....so not sure what happened here...I had to change this to today as the pool was not a goer this morning so I did this earlier this evening....I started out with the turbo set to 80% SCALING AND 1.5 CALIBRATION FACTOR the warm up was hard for the first 5mins or so (I think my legs are still fatigued from Wimbleball and yesterday's run....) but then they warmed up and felt much better. I made it out to the end of the warm up, it still felt hard but I thought pushing it might make things free up a bit more...oh dear...I was going full pelt 100+rpm on the LCR and the 11 cog and I was only hitting 180-190W....so the scaling was defn out, I stopped and changed it to 90% SCALING RECALIBRATED - CAL FACTOR 1.7....similar problems ensued I maxed out on gears and could not hit 220W....so.....I reset everything:
100% SCALING AND CALIBRATION 0%
I used this for the majoirity of the FTP - OMFG/ it was hard...I managed the first 20mins although I think only only kept in the 215-220W for about 5msec! I was pouring sweat like a hosepipe and it hurt from about 2mins....when I got to the 5min break I dropped the power to 60W and took the gears all the way down....however when I hit the second set it was like the last few bits of the VO2max....I got a few mins it and it was like someone pulled the plug and I was cycling in treacle....I just had to power down I simply could not keep it going.....very disappointing....on top of that my scales tell me my weight is back up to 90.5kg and BF is 19.8% (although this was 4.2% off when you did the skin folds....) not a good end to the day......hope tomorrow is better....

Woke up late :-( got to the pool and the session went okay but what are reverse catch ups (need to ask Mike) ??I had to miss them (2x200m) as I didn't know what they were and time was an issue so I did:
600 warm up (100m Swim/100m Pull alt +20s)
100 single
100 catch
100 fists
100 stroke
4x400 80% in on (Target-Actual):
6:00-6:05 (oops...)
5:58-5:58
5:56-5:56
5:545:52 (overcooked the last length)
100 cool down
By the end I was getting tired but everything felt good

Tomorrow another pool set!
I.

Back to Wimbleball

2 January 2011

Just a short post until I have the data from my Garmin uploaded...I returned to Wimbleball today for the first time in a year...the course is unchanged - hard in places, not in others - but still beautiful even covered in a light sprinkling of snow as it was today. I went round the course with a friend from BCTTT - or rather I held him up....he has 16years on me and weighs a few pounds less and it really showed on the hills! Unfortunately due to the snow/ice/wet conditions we had to be careful so the time reflects this - 2hrs 34mins to do one lap - slow but still faster than I did it in the 2009 race! Interestingly last year (6th Feb) I did the same one lap effort and I did it in 3hrs 6mins (and it was not icy or wet then)....def an improvement over the year then!
